The Founding
Peregrin Arc was founded on the premise that the answer to a very large question had already been determined, and that the remaining work was not to find the answer but to construct the conditions under which the answer would be useful.
The answer is 42.
We did not arrive at this number. It was provided to us. The provenance of the calculation is a matter of public record, though the record is long, and most summaries of it are inadequate. We will say only this: the computation was thorough, the result was verified, and the question to which 42 is the answer has not been identified. We consider this an acceptable starting condition.
Our founding documents cite "the systematic operation of institutions at the intersection of improbability and necessity" as the company's purpose. Our early investors understood this to mean that we would build things that probably should not exist but, upon reflection, probably should. They were correct. Several of them have since requested clarification on what, specifically, we are doing. We are doing 42 things. The number is not arbitrary.
The Portfolio
Peregrin Arc operates 42 independent subsidiaries. Each subsidiary is a complete institution: staffed, operational, and committed to its stated purpose. The subsidiaries span insurance, dispute resolution, consulting, archival services, regulatory compliance, coaching, retail, government administration, investigative research, and several categories for which no standard industry classification exists.
We do not coordinate the subsidiaries' activities. We do not impose a shared strategy. Each operation pursues its purpose independently. The coherence of the portfolio, such as it is, is emergent rather than designed; a property we anticipated but did not engineer.
Some subsidiaries are older than the holding company. Ethically Sourced Vengeance has operated, under various names, since 44 BCE. The Institute for Competitive Napping was founded in 1931. We formalized their status. We did not create their purpose.
Some subsidiaries were not planned. The Interplanetary Pants Museum was among the first; its founding logic, which seemed obvious at the time, has resisted summarization ever since. Pre-Owned Asteroid Brokerage emerged because someone asked whether you could buy an asteroid, and no one present had a reason to say no. Several subsidiaries materialized from processes that the relevant personnel cannot fully reconstruct. We have stopped investigating how this happens. We have not stopped benefiting from it.
The Number
We are frequently asked why we operate exactly 42 subsidiaries.
We operate 42 subsidiaries because 42 is the answer. The question to which it is the answer has not been determined. We believe that operating 42 institutions across a sufficient range of human and non-human activity may contribute to the identification of the question, or may not. We do not require certainty on this point. We require only 42 operations, and we have them.
We have considered operating 43. We have decided against it.
Current Status
Peregrin Arc maintains operations across multiple jurisdictions, not all of which are conventionally recognized. Our headcount is not disclosed. Our revenue is not disclosed. Our organizational chart exists but is, by the admission of the person who maintains it, "aspirational."
We remain committed to our founding purpose. The answer is 42. The question remains our ongoing investigation. We are making progress, though progress in this context is difficult to measure, and we have not attempted to.
